Westport South Beach Historical Society brings you #WildFloats2020!

Beachcombing season is here! Have you ever wanted to find a coveted authentic Japanese glass float? For years, Japanese fishing floats have been making their way across the pacific ocean to land on our beaches. Few people have experienced the joy of finding one of these treasures after it’s made the long journey to our shores, but those who have will remember it always.

The Westport Maritime Museum wants to bring the excitement of finding these treasures to visitors in Westport. They have imported authentic Japanese floats from the tsunami cleanup efforts in Japan and release them back into the wild to wash up on Westport’s beaches throughout the year.

So take a step back in time, take a walk along our beaches, and keep an eye out for glass floats! The Maritime Museum’s floats will have a small diamond engraved set of initials and the year WSBHS 2020. If you find a glass float, we request you to record and share it on Facebook or Instagram and tag with #wildfloats2020 and #experiencewestport. Perhaps you’ll even find a precious float covered in barnacles resting on our beach after its long voyage from Japan.

Happy hunting!
