The Wave

The Jetty at Westhaven State Park has the most consistent surfable waves in Washington State. On a good day, you will see multiple A-frame peaks to surf just over the bluff from the Westhaven State Park parking lot. The Jetty attracts everyone from beginners to world-class surfers. With it’s all sand bottom, it’s also a perfect place for beginners to take their first surf lesson. This truly is the best place in the PNW to hang out on the beach, catch some waves, and watch the sunset on a memorable day.

Know before you go!

When walking out on the bluff, take a few minutes, and watch for signs of rip currents and other dangers in the water. Surfers should be cautious of the strong rip current pulling out to sea along the jetty. To avoid the rip current along the jetty, we recommend staying about 50 yards south of the jetty, especially for non-experienced surfers. The current is known to pull north and south along the beach, so keep an eye on your positioning. And remember, if in doubt, don't go out!

Location & Parking

Parking for the Jetty is located at Westhaven State Park at the end of Jetty Haul Rd. This parking lot requires a Washington State Discovery Pass for parking, which you can purchase at the pay station at the entrance of the parking lot. Day parking passes are also available at the pay station. The park features bathrooms, outdoor showers, and token operated heated indoor showers for those looking to warm up after surfing.

The Wave

The Groins are located on the north side of the Westport marina and, during the right conditions, can provide a nice lefthand point break. During sizeable open ocean swells, waves make their way into the harbor and break along the four-finger jetties(or groins). The number one thing to be aware of when planning to surf The Groins is the water moving in and out of Grays Harbor during tidal changes. In the PNW, we sometimes have a near 20-foot tidal change during certain times of the year.

Know before you go

The Groins are not a beginner's surf spot. Knowledge of the tidal currents, wave patterns, and being a strong paddler is advised. Powerful currents can start in a matter of minutes when the tide begins to shift, and it's not uncommon for surfers to be pushed and pulled away from the break during strong currents. Please use caution, and always, if in doubt, don't paddle out!

Where to park

When you drive through the Marina District keep right onto Neddie Rose Dr and park on the north side of the road. You will not be able to see the wave from your car so be prepared to climb up the rock wall to view and access the wave.

The Wave

The Cove refers to Half Moon Bay, which sits between Westhaven State Park and The Marina District. Much like The Groins, The Cove is located inside Grays Harbor, and waves travel from the open ocean into the harbor and land on the shores of beautiful Half Moon Bay. This wave was once a favorite surf spot for advanced surfers, but over the years, the sand bottom has reformed the wave into a heavy and dangerous shore break. Although The Cove is rarely surfed these days, the beach offers plenty of space to hang out and watch the exploding surf land onshore.

Things to know

The Cove is one of the best places to watch the giant winter swell crash onto the shore, but we do not recommend surfing The Cove. Waves and currents here can be very powerful. During large swells, be cautions of rouge waves pushing far up the steep beach. Individuals should not go near the water’s edge during large surf.

Where to park

Parking for The Cove is halfway down Jetty Haul Rd on your way to The Jetty in Westhaven State Park. There are a few paved parking spots on Jetty Haul Rd, and if you drive up into the dirt lot, you’ll find plenty of parking with views of the bay. No parking passes are required to park in this lot.

Get ready… A little knowledge before paddling out goes a long way. If you're new to surfing or surfing in Westport, we recommend visiting a local surf shop, booking a surf lesson and talking to other surfers before getting in the water. And remember, if in doubt, don't paddle out!
