Your Packing List For the Washington Coast

Getting ready for a trip to the Washington Coast? As locals who call the Washington Coast home, we’ve put together a simple, no-nonsense packing list to help you prepare for your PNW adventure.

Layer Up

Don’t let the sunshine in the city fool you. The Washington Coast has a climate all its own, often cooler and breezier, even in the middle of summer. We take pride in our ever-changing climate; it keeps our flora and fauna thriving but it also means packing accordingly.

Always pack layers: We’ve learned to embrace the layers—T-shirts, sweaters, multiple pairs of pants, undergarments, thermals, extra socks, a beanie and a rain jacket are a must for Washington travel. Trust us; you’ll thank yourself when that light drizzle rolls in.

Rubber-soled shoes: No matter, if you're razor clamming, fishing, or simply exploring the coast, a solid pair of waterproof shoes, is essential. Opt for rubber soles—they'll give you the traction you need on the wet sand.

PNW Beach Day Must-Haves

Westport and the extended Grays Harbor County offer quiet sandy beaches right outside of the Seattle/Tacoma area, making it the perfect spot to plan your summer escape.

Beach Blanket, chair, and bag: When you plan your visit, make sure you bring along the comforts that will let you relax and soak it all in.

Bug Spray: Don’t forget the bug spray—mosquitoes can love the coast as much as we do, especially at dawn and dusk.

Sun Protection: No matter the cloud coverage, the sun’s rays can be damaging, especially for young children. Be sure to pack wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, lip Balm, and sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. It’s crucial for long days beachcombing up and down the coast.

Beach Toys: For your little ones (and the kid in you), remember to bring the sand castle molds, shovels, and kites!

Bring a pen: Enjoy Geocaching? Make sure to pack a pen to log your geocache finds.

The Essentials

Snacks: Whether you're exploring Light State Park or watching the sea lions in the Marina, a well-fed explorer is a happy one. Pack energy bars, trail mix, and a reusable water bottle to keep the whole family energized.

Books or E-Reader: Bring a beach read and find peace on our sandy Washington shoreline.  Need suggestions? Check out some PNW favorites: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Myers, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson.

Phone Charger and Portable Charger: We know how important it is to capture those special moments, so keep your phone and camera charged up to capture every stunning moment in Westport.

Hand sanitizer, First Aid Kit, and Wipes: Whether you're dealing with sand, spills, or sticky hands, these extras ensure a stress-free adventure at the coast.

Cash: While cards are widely accepted, some local spots might be cash-only.

Bring Binoculars!

Westport is ideal for bird watching. Don’t miss out, bring your ‘nocs and a camera to capture the moment. Catch sight of the Black-bellied Plovers, Pacific and American Golden-Plovers, Whimbrels, Marbled Godwits, and so many more. Read more about birding in Westport: here. Check out Bottle Beach State Park, an official location on the Washington State Birding Trail.

For Your Furry Friends

We’re dog lovers here in Westport, and we’re thrilled when visitors bring their furry family members along.

Leash, Bags, and a Portable Water Bowl: Keep your pup hydrated and ready for fun. our pups are as excited as we are about the beach, so bring a leash, some bags, and a portable water bowl to keep them safe and happy.

Toys: We know how much pups love their toys, but trust us—tennis balls don’t stand up to the saltwater and sand. Opt for something a bit more durable, buoyant toys that can handle the surf.

Need a pet-friendly place to stay? We’ve got you covered—check out our accommodations page to find where you and your dog can stay while visiting.

Fishing

Fishing is at the core of our identity, as the largest commercial fishing port in Washington, it’s woven into the fabric of our community. So, when you head to Westport Marina, be sure to bring your rods, reels, tackle box, and a durable cooler. If you’re new to fishing or crabbing and don’t have the gear, don’t worry—we have you covered.

Surfing

If you are thinking about ripping some waves, wetsuits are a must. The Washington Coast is known for its chilly waters, even in the height of summer. Bring your surfboard and wetsuit, or rent from Bigfoot Surf School, Steepwater Surf Shop, LOGE Westport or The Surf Shop. Learn more about where to surf and check out our live webcam for the current conditions.

Razor Clamming

Razor clamming is a tradition here in Westport. To take home some meaty razor clams, you’ll need a shovel or clam gun, net and a bucket. Waders or waterproof pants are highly encouraged. Learn about how to join in on the fun

Check the Events Calendar

Before you head out, it’s a good idea to check the Westport-Grayland Chamber of Commerce events calendar, to ensure you're well-prepared to get the most out of your visit. For instance, if you are visiting during our annual Pirate Daze Festival held in late June, make sure you pack an eye patch, tricorn hat, bandana and your best pirate impression to fully embrace the experience.

Taste the Local Flavor and Take Home a Piece of Westport

If there’s one thing we know, it’s seafood. Discover where to dine: here. While you’re here, don’t just fill up on the food—make sure to leave room in your bag for those one-of-a-kind finds at our local shops.
